Chapter 13: The Confession, Continued
The Chinese chose JP as the target because one of the students the CIA had recruited from his school became scared and confessed to the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, which prompted State Security to look into the school’s employees. They were able to find multiple red flags about JP, especially his reclusiveness, and determined that he must be undercover. Now Sunny’s mission was to find out who else JP recommended to the CIA for recruitment.
Sunny’s colleagues at the State Security Bureau did not have high expectations about the mission. At first, almost all of them insisted that a sex worker was not a good cover for Sunny. They believed that a college student, a rich heiress, or maybe even a normal virtuous traditional woman would be more attractive to JP.
Most agents were polite in their criticism, knowing that Sunny was the daughter of the Deputy Division Director. But Captain Liu, a guy who also had a solid family background, was more straightforward. “You don’t understand what men look for. He can find a hooker anytime he wants. He may want to go to bed with you, but will not pursue a long-term relationship.”
Sunny would not back down. “I studied his file word by word and listened to his phone surveillance for hours. Did you?”
